The apple update hassle has forced me to do something to free up
space on my root partition. Its down to moving fink elsewhere or
trashing it altogether. Can someone PLEASE advise? I have a linux box
for XWindows and almost never use fink's XWindows on MacOSX. I can
easily do without fink if I can't find a better solution.
Background: I've use a G3 Beige Server box as my main workstation. It
has two 8gb drives, originally configured for raid, which I never
tured on. See df output below. I partitioned both drives into four
2gb partitions, a1 to a4 and b1 to b4. MacOSX is on b3, OS9 on b4.
Plenty of space overall but b3 is chronically short.
I've moved the swap space to /a1, all the applications that WOULD
move to /b2, the developer tools to /b2, only installed bare
essentials from fink, and moved everything else to other partitions.
Yet the 10.1.4 upgrade refused to install until I turned off Moo
window compression.
I've asked about this before and only got vague speculations that
applications "might" break. I'm hoping for a definitive answer. Will
things break if I move /sw and substitute a symbolic link, mount
point, whatever works? I'm hoping for specific idiot-proof
instructions that I won't have to debug.

Hmmm, just noticed the load emacs and ant are imposing (mainly use
vim and ruby here; use linux for java programming).
