Yes, in the past I e.g. only symlinked /sw/src to only share the 
source files between systems.

Well, you probably could safely symlink /sw/src and /sw/fink, w/o a 
major speed hit (except for the "fink" command which has to access 
/sw/fink but if that isn't to be used often on the iBook, no problem).
