I feel that if the URL link ends in "tar.gz" then you should get a tarball, but that is just my opinion. As a suggested workaround that works for me, download the necessary tarballs by hand, then use "sudo" to move/copy them into the /sw/src directory and re-run your "fink install" command. It sees the tarball in place and runs with it.
