Oooh, good idea: add check-in date as a piece of metadata to available packages. Then all sorts of interesting applications fall out, including what you describe, as well as updates to packages you're interested in but haven't installed, etc. Could be possible to get this info from the current timestamp for the .info files, though CVS might offer a better way to pass this information through [???].
