If for some reason you cannot or you don't want to use xauth, at least, NEVER use the host name of the remote machine with xhost. Use the IP address instead. Also, after running the app, for example, nedit, disable the access from this machine, i.e.
xhost + my.remote.ip.address
nedit &
xhost - my.remote.ip.address
This is a little pain, as you'll have to issue a xhost + each time you want to run a remote app but, belive me, it's worthy.
Of course, the most secure way of doing this is by using X forwarding with ssh, as Martin Costable suggested.

on MacOS X IN the xterm :
xhost host.for.bar
( allow the remote host "host.foor.bar" to display on the xwindows running on MacOS X)
on the remote host ( e.g. csh):
setenv DISPLAY mac.foo.bar:0.0
( "mac.foo.bar" is your Mac running the Xwindows )
