"\M" is the meta key. I find that in Terminal.app, the meta key is mapped to the Option key on the

Put this into .Xmodmap:

keycode 63 = Mode_switch
keycode 66 = Alt_L
clear mod2
clear mod3
add mod2 = Alt_L

Many international kbd users will have their Option key mapped to Mode_switch in Terminal, though, because otherwise there is no way to type |,\, etc. (except switching to US-layout, which I sometimes do on the fly...).
