I wonder, as you re-write this message every six months, if you can
think of anything that might help avoid having to send it?
Would better testing help? Is it feasible to test? Is there something
else that you'd like to be doing, but haven't been able to for some
reason? I'd love to hear what's been tried and what's worked or hasn't,
if anyone has time to report on such things.

He did suggest what was needed to avoid sending it. The call was for individual users, such as you, to behave as responsible administrators. That means that before upgrading any system with software from Fink, Redhat, Apple, Microsoft, SGI, Sun, etc... you do a sufficient backup that will allow for disaster recovery. Many run completely separate systems for testing. I do for most of my OSs.
Since I don't have a redundant system for my Tpowerbook - I read the web page and chose to stay with both 10.1.x and an appropriate Fink to maintain the environment I need. I haven't had any problems, but I don't have some of the newer features. I am thankful for those of you who do upgrade and report problems, because that is the way we all learn. We, the users of this list, ARE the test systems for the developers. It is unreasonable to expect Open source developers to test a particular environment other than the development environment. That would be our job as testers. We serve each other.
In terms of what can be done, I think is is being done. People are testing and reporting. When you report give complete reports that may be useful to others - include hardware and software information.
Thanks to everyone - it works.
