I tried removing and reinstalling bundle-gnome, and it is the version from stable, but I still have the same error, with gnome-session not being found. Oh well - it's not the first time I've made a new fink installation, so it won't kill me ;-)

Ouch! You make a clear case for just copying the .info/.patch files over
to local when you want to play around with unstable.
You may not need to blow all of fink away. Try this:
1) Verify that bundle-gnome points to the stable version with "fink list
bundle-gnome"
2) If so, try installing bundle-gnome. If not, then do another "fink
selfupdate-cvs" to unconfuse things.
3) If there are any specific problems, check in on the list.

Hi,
I edited my fink.conf to contain unstable, so I could install
fix-fink, and rebuild things linked against the outdated libpng. After
installing fix-fink, I then edited my fink.conf back, to remove the
unstable paths. I then ran fix-fink, and it appears to have resulted
in lots of things from unstable being built (I should look more closely
at what it's asking me when I say yes to something!). Maybe it used a
stale index or something? Anyway, gnome no longer works (under
XDarwin), and the message from the console says:
/Users/sherlock/.xinitrc: exec: gnome-session: not found
It appears that I now have several gnome things from unstable (including control-center 2.03) is there something other than gnome-session that should be exec'd? Should I simply go back to the old gnome stuff - presumably the easiest way is to blow away fink and start again :-(.
Thanks for any help! (and I do love fink!),
Cheers, Gavin
