Any ideas on what I should try next?
run 'sudo gcc_select 3', you're using gcc3.3, but the main fink tree only supports gcc 3.1.

Should this issue be in the FAQs?
I note that the Fink web page says "After installing both the new package manager and the Developer Tools update, fink will ask you to reset your gcc version whenever that is necessary." So I assumed that I didn't need to worry about gcc versions.
