I see...but that doesn't get installed on my system after
following your instructions below...

Cool, that worked, I now just have

 i   system-xfree86   2:4.3-1      [placeholder for user installed x11]

that appeared after force-removing the other two, and pango
installs without demanding xfree86

That wasn't my problem, I have the same xfree86 4.3 binaries
from the XonX site I've had since they came out last year...

I guess the system-xfree86 packages just didn't
automatically update themselves through this whole mess.
