I think my post for help yesterday may have been less than clear, so I'll try again....
I'm running OS X 10.2.8 with all recent patches, fink 0.17.1. Yesterday I upgraded to gcc3.3. After self-updating fink to use the 10.1-gcc3.3 tree, I started to update installed packages, including the xfree86 set ( -base, -rootless, -base-shlibs, -rootless-shlibs) via 'fink update xfree86-rootless'.
Build and install apparently went w/o a hitch. Now when I start X11 (either via the XDarwin icon or via 'startx' in a Terminal window) it dies almost instantly. Examination of the error messages (full text included below) suggests a font-related problem that I can't quite track down, viz., "could not open default font 'fixed'" after some other complaints about font paths (the paths it's compalining about *do* exist, btw).
I've been running xfree86-* 4.2.1.1-4 successfully for months before I upgraded gcc yesterday and haven't tweaked my .xinitrc in a long time. Nevertheless, I moved ~/.xinitrc out of the way so as to use /usr/X11R6/...../xinitrc; same problem occurs (no surprise).
Has anyone else seen this problem? This one doesn't appear anywhere in the FAQ that I can see. Any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated.
