Yeah, that's odd all right.
Try looking at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.dir . That was one place where I found "fixed" font entries. It may be that you have some corrupt or missing fonts.dir files.

You've verified that all of the packages got installed, not just built? If so, try reinstalling them.
I used 'fink list -i' to verify that the xfree86-* packages had been installed. All the same, I reinstalled (fink reinstall ...) all of them, with no change in what happens when I try to run....
I've also verified that gcc3.3 is installed and is being used, both via gcc --version and by watching what happens when other packages were updated.
I'm really puzzled by the font path complaints that I see. Is there a config file somewhere that I should check.
I found a way around this whole problem.... This msg is really for the archives in the event that someone else runs into the same problem....
I tried 'fink reinstall xfree86-whatever' and ran into the same complaint about missing 'fixed' font. I also tried 'fink rebuild ...' to no avail. And I couldn't spot anything obviously amiss in .../fonts.dir. Soooo when all else fails, get out the biggest hammer available and get to work....
I completely removed fink's installation of X11 by running
sudo dpkg -r --force-depends xfree86-rootless\ xfree86-rootless-shlibs xfree86-base xfree86-base-shlibs
and I manually removed all traces of xfree86-* from various directories under /sw (i.e., trashed the distribution files and the .deb files). Then I did a 'fink install ...' of the four packages.
That left me in a spot where launching XDarwin (via startx or via icon) generated (all too familiar) complaints about .Xauthority. Regenerating .Xauthority fixed that, and now I have X11 again.
Cheers, Mark
