OK, I finally have gotten rid of the nasty "You have an existing X11 installation", with help from Alexander, Martin (indirectly) and at least one other. Here's a summary, cleaned up (multiple redundant steps eliminated) of what I did (not necessarily in this order):

[As] Alexander Hansen wrote:
First you want to clean up the package database:

sudo dpkg --remove --force-depends xfree86

I also did su, followed by

dpkg --remove --force-all xfree86-shlibs

Probably still under su, I also did

rm -rf /etc/X11 /usr/X11R6

(per Alexander, with someone's insertion of a space between /X11 and /usr).

I also removed X11.app, as per Alexander.

Finally, after downloading Apple's X11 package from http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/download/, I installed it, the Developer.mpkg and X11SDK.pkg, the latter two from the Xcode Tools CD.

HTH,

Jonathan
