I think I got the gconf stuff sorted by pitching the env files from ~/. It is still crashing and I wonder if this is the cause...

Not much on Google similar.
I don't have proof yet but it looks like maybe startx as root does not have the same problems.

Maybe not: I've not had any problems with GNOME (2.4, of course) and XFree86-4.4 (except for the warning at startup). I never do startx as root.
