I could be wrong, but I believe these two posts and their follow-ups explain why gnome-print doesn't print anymore on Mac OS X/darwin:

If I am right, it looks quite bad. They replaced fontmap with fontconfig in gnomeprint. There is a fontconfig in Apple's system, but apparently it doesn't work with gnomeprint. There is also a fink fontconfig. I don't know if that would work.

James-
Thanks for the post. I looked at the two messages referenced above; my understanding of the content is, unfortunately, minimal. However, your assessment of the situation is quite clear.
I installed fontconfig2-dev 2.2.0-3. fontconfig1, _1-dev and _1-shlibs were already shown installed as virtual packages (v030428-1). I rebuilt gnumeric; alas, no change in printing behavior.
Stan
But it is not gnumeric that is the problem. It is gnome-print.
James
...which is what previous posts have also mentioned. I realize patience is needed until some volunteer kindly tackles the problem.
