Everything (seems to have) worked (which, if nothing else, will
provide an answer for the next person who wants to do this)!  :-)

I now have version 2:4.4-2 of system-xfree86{,-dev,-shlibs}.

This also seems to have solved my GTK+2 font problem.

I know it may be off-topic for this list, but are there any
libraries (a) I should recompile, or (b) no longer need?

As part of the Jaguar installation, I had to download/install
Xquartz.tgz.  The installation gave me no grief whatsoever on my
PowerMac G4 500 (AGP Graphics).
