I had the same problem this morning with
emacs21-xaw3d 21.3.50-20031224-12
and Apple X11 on OS X 10.3.4
I started emacs from a Terminal.app window.
My DISPLAY variable was set to :0.0 and the problem
disappeared after restarting X11, in fact it worked from
the same window that originally wasn't able to connect.

Next time when this happens, it may be worth checking
other Xwindows applications to see if this is an Apple X11
problem. I didn't think of that until after I had already
restarted X11...

I could not start emacs from Terminal.app. However, I could start xemacs from Terminal.app (it even started X11). However, I could only start xemacs that once from Terminal.app. In addition, after starting X11, I cannot start emacs or xemacs from an xterm or Terminal.app like I used to. I also cannot start xemacs or any other application from the Applications window in the Apple X11 menubar. I can start xemacs and other x applications from the window manager (I am using icewm w/ gnome support or wmaker currently). When I try to start emacs from xterm or Terminal.app I get:

[Gary-K-Olsons-Computer:~]:bash:505$: emacs: Cannot connect to X server :1.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xauth' program to verify that you have the proper
authorization information needed to connect the X server.
An insecure way to solve the problem may be to use `xhost'.

when I try to start xemacs from xterm or Terminal.app I get:

[Gary-K-Olsons-Computer:~]:bash:506$:

Gui error: X server not responding
, ":1.0"

when I try to start another X app from xterm or Terminal.app I get:

[Gary-K-Olsons-Computer:~]:bash:507$: lyx: Can't open display :1--No such file or directory
LyX: unable to access X display, exiting

[1]+ Exit 1 lyx
[Gary-K-Olsons-Computer:~]:bash:507$:

I am thinking that there might be some error or incompatibility between Apple's X11 and 10.3.4. Any further ideas. Thanks for the feedback so far.
