Then it must be the file /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status itself that is corrupt. There is a backup file named status-old in the same directory. If you compare these two, maybe you see if the old one is correct, so you can replace "status" by "status-old". Or you could edit the status file. But you have to be careful, this contains the whole package database for dpkg.
