That is the case. I'm using Apple's X11. I have cc'd the maintainer
(though I think he's on this list).

There's a parallel thread on -beginners about this: gimp2 is set up
not to use _any_ fink freetype2 package you install, but rather that
which comes with your X11 installation (check in /usr/X11R6/lib).
What flavor of X11 do you have? If the package isn't working with
Apple's X11 or with XFree86, then the maintainer may need to rework it
to use an external freetype.
