(I'm the "other" Alexander, by the way, so don't post to me about gimp2. I maintain one of the "fully OS X aware" packages!)
Sorry! I did not mean to imply that. I just assumed the complainant would check the maintainer's name to see that the gimp maintainer is Alexander Strange.
I think we should advocate using fink commander, because it makes it spectacularly easy to find and to contact the package maintainers. For example, very recently, I inquired about a new version of GFTP. The maintainer posted an update immediately, but it didn't build. So, we went back and forth, and after three builds, everything was cool. The fink community IS very active and very effective.
WRT freetype 219 and gimp, I wonder if another problem is caused by applesystemfonts. I remember that installing applesystemfonts dramatically slowed gimp down. I removed the package, but I suspect that the huge number of fonts are still installed in X11 somewhere. I have to do chemistry, so I haven't had a chance to pursue the matter further, but I think the problem is that freetype cannot handle either a huge number of fonts or particular font types.
about $0.02 worth.
