This looks suspicious:
gcc version 4.0.0 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5026)
configure:2509: $? = 0
configure:2511: gcc -V </dev/null >&5
gcc: argument to `-V' is missing
configure:2514: $? = 1
configure:2538: checking for C compiler default output
configure:2541: gcc   -I/usr/X11R6/include/freetype2 -fno-coalesce -I/sw/include -L/sw/lib conftest.c  >&5
cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-fno-coalesce"
configure:2544: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| #line 2517 "configure"
Just to make sure you've got the right compiler, what do you get from explicitly running 'gcc --version'?

Actually, -fno-coalesce was OK for gcc-3.3, but doesn't exist for gcc-4.0. I suspect that this package was never tested on 10.4 (maintainer CCed).

Interesting--I managed to get beyond the configure stage (10.4.2, XCode2.1) but had another error--unfortunately I wasn't able to capture it, but I'll retry.
