The version in /usr/local just happened tonight, after about 40 attempts 
the other ways. Nothing is compiled against it, I just got desperate and 
tried installing the GNU gettext to see if that would help. So I don't 
think that's the root of the problem. Could it be that the version in 
/usr that's causing the problem?
