What is this "standalone installer" you are talking about?

If you mean the X11Update2006.pkg contained in the X11Update2006.dmg 
that you can download from 
<http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11update2006.html>, then 
you should be careful: This is really only an *update* (and BTW exactly 
the same thing that you get when you run SoftwareUpdate). It contains 
only a part of the files that are installed by the X11User.pkg, and none 
of the files from X11SDK.pkg. If you install *only* this, you won't get 
a working X11.
