Well, I never used anything like the commands you give above. The Bitstream Vera fonts simply disappeared (e.g. from xlsfonts) after the Apple X11 1.1.2 update. Looking deeper in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/ fonts/TTF revealed that the files are still there, but they are not recognized by fc-cache. I downloaded the Bitstream Vera 1.10 package from gnome and replaced the TTF files, ran
sudo mkfontscale sudo mkfontdir sudo fc-cache -vf . xset fp rehashin above mentioned directory, and now it works: starting a new konsole gives me the possibility to select my beloved Bitstream Vera Sans Mono Regular 11pt again :-)
