What fink distribution are you using? grep -i distribution /sw/etc/ fink.conf should return "Distribution: 10.4". If you get "Distribution: 10.4-transitional" instead then you're still using the obsolete 10.4-transitional tree and need to follow the instructions on the finkproject.org homepage at the bottom beginning with 2006-07-24: Reminder: "10.4-transitional" Tree Unsupported on August 1st, 2006.
