That works fine -- thanks!  I'll have to see about getting this started
automatically when I load X.

Incidentally, running the gnome-settings-daemon in the background as above
didn't cause the XScreensaver daemon to start, but I think this is probably
because I previously turned the Gnome screensaver off in the relevant
dialog of the gnome control center.

IME, XScreensaver doesn't work well as an X client on Macs.  As best I can
remember, it goes active if you haven't interacted with the X server in the
last N minutes; user interaction with non-X apps doesn't prevent the
screensaver from coming active.  Additionally, I vaguely remember having
some trouble getting XScreensaver to let go of the screen when it came up,
but it's been a while.

I'm not really concerned about the XScreensaver problems -- if I want
XScreensaver, I'll use the native Mac build rather than the one in Fink.
