I spoke too soon.  The xscreensaver daemon *did* start, just after a delay.
That's ok; "xscreensaver-command -exit" takes care of that.

This may make it a bit harder to add to an X startup script, since the
xscreensaver process doesn't appear to start initially, but I'll figure
something out.
