I purged GNOME using: fink purge --recursive gnome-base. Thanks Alexander. I then removed the gnome deb files, and rebuilt gnome using bundle-gnome. I also got rid of XQuartz-2.5.0, and restored Apple's X11-2.3.5. When I run gnome, it loads until gnome-settings-daemon quits unexpectedly. At this point, all windows do not have the theme window title bar and can not be moved. One can do things inside the windows though. Does anybody have any idea why the gnome-settings-daemon quit, and why the windows don't work properly? Incidently, if I run icewm-gnome2 this window manager which depends upon gnome2 works just fine.
