Such a "Greek" procedure is not necessary! The build finally succeeded  
in /sw on the HFSX volume:

The monitor script, which this time checked every 5 minutes, indicates  
with 222 MB left that around 4.5 GB were allocated by the build  
process + one or two GB of swap space. The highest amount of disk  
space seems to be needed around the time the comparison of the *- 
checksum.o files takes place, or shortly thereafter.
