One last comment on this issue. A bitter objection often heard from the other
FSF gcc developers is that
Apple rarely fixes their assembler and linker bugs. While it is true that such
fixes are never backported
to prior Xcode releases, on Lion we are fortunate to have had the opportunity
to obtain all of the clang,
assembler and linker fixes added during the development of Mountain Lion and
iOS 6. We should welcome the
opportunity to leverage those by encouraging users to use the improved cctools
(as well as clang) in Xcode 4.5.
While I could have set the xcode dependency to 4.4.1, I choose 4.5 because the
CLI installer in 4.4.1 was
buggy and would silenty fail leaving the user with the prior cctools. This
issue is resolved in 4.5.
