Here's my two bits worth:

I agree with Colter. I can't see how a tabbed interface would improve
things. I accept that it may simply be that some people are used to it
having used Mozilla or Adium, but other than that I don't believe it's a
better interface.

With multiple windows I can spread them round my screen when holding more
than one conversation at once, or in particular if waiting for someone to
reply to something while I talk to someone else. I can see what they say
straight away while still typing in the other window, etc.

In Fire, if I'm expecting a new message from someone I can even open a blank
window for them as if I'm about to start typing to them and then leave it
open and empty - anything they say will then appear in that window rather
than opening another. (It doesn't work that way in some of the other
clients).

The only issue that I can see is that of new windows popping up when new
messages come in (and I don't already have a window there for them). This
is irritating because of the "part of my typing goes into the new window on
accident" problem, but I don't see how a tabbed interface is better than the
ICQ method of telling me that a new message has come in with the buddy icon,
rather than popping up a window.

Personally, I believe that if there's no way to make the new window pop up
behind the front window then that's the next best alternative.

...for what it's worth.
