At the risk of duplication other comments, this decision refers to the case of the shooting on Aug. 10, 1999 at a Jewish Community Center in GRANADA HILLS, Calif (near LA). The man who later pled guilty to that crime is Buford Furrow, Jr. Messages were exchanged in Maryland concerning this case because Councilmember Blair Ewing of Montgomery County used it to justify his attempts to add regulations on gun sales. From one message we have:
1) Mr. Furrow was a convicted felon disqualified from owning guns by condition of sentence (see Appendix F. of his Judgment on the conviction and the Statement of Defendant, item 6,(s)) in Furrow's prior criminal record. That record used to be available, but is no longer, at URL http://www.apbonline.com/newscenter/breakingnews/1999/08/12/jewishdocs.html . 2) Mr. Furrow's prior conviction was for 2nd degree assault. The assault took place at the Fairfax Psychiatric Hospital in Kirkland, a Seattle suburb, where he had sought treatment. 3) The sentencing judge specifically reminded Furrow that he was prohibited from owning Firearms as a result of his plea and Furrow signed a document acknowledging that fact as well as agreeing to a search of his home for firearms. 4) Mr. Furrow had been an FFL and police knew he had owned firearms in the past, but did not search his property to secure firearms. One corrections official told CBS News, 'We planned to [search]; we just hadn't gotten around to it yet.' 5) Mr. Furrow killed a postal worker using a Glock semiautomatic pistol. Originally, that pistol was purchased by the police department in Cosmopolis, Grays Harbor County and later sold to Furrow. 6) Mr. Furrow's gun purchases were made in Washington State almost 1000 miles distant from the location of the daycare center where he wounded 5 people and later killed the postal worker.
