Here's a long shot: People v. Blue, Colo., 544 P.2d 385 (1975).

  "Defendants have not contended that they were armed because of any
  threat to their lives or in order to defend their homes or
  property." (544 P.2d 391)

I read this to suggest that the Colorado Supremes might possibly agree
that self defense was a legitimate reason for a felon to possess
firearms, but since the defendants hadn't raised the issue, they
weren't going to talk about it.
