consider what the german airfoce did to rotterdam in a day or two; imagine what the germans could have done to the warsaw ghetto!
Bombed out ruins make excellent infantry positions. Note Cassino or even German cities where the Germans made stands and were tough to dig out. An armed populace in the bombed out ruins of Warsaw would have been in the same positions as german soldiers in Cassino and elsewhere.
