Because we never wanted to change the public API in a big way (causing 
serious adjustments in drivers and applications).

I'd say it's arguable what is generally (aside of the cdecl trickery) 
more problematic - add one field to a structure and bump its version or 
add one more method to the interface because you now need more 
parameters than originally expected.
