AFAIK, there's a long legacy, in Delphi components at least, of using SELECT * 
as the dataset spec for emulating a "table" component (TTable and derivatives). 
 Sure, this goes back to half-cocked conversions from antiquated desktop 
databases but I don't think it's a question of whether we should (or not) 
support bad design and programming practices, if the SQL standard actually 
permits them.
