Hi Guys,

I thought I would share this with everyone.

Summit has a site with a .pdf showing all manufacturer motor firing
orders and distributor rotation. I know a lot of you out there are like
me and work on everything including Ponchos so this is very useful
information to archive.

Easy to download the file too..

(Note where #1 is located)

Bob, I would start from the beginning. First make sure you have fuel ,
the engine oil pressure pump has been primed and your battery is fully
charged. Check all fluid levels, rad, tranny is in park and set park
brake.
(Note-leave rad cap off until engine warms up and thermostat opens to
prevent vapor lock & overheating. Have some premixed anti freeze handy
to add. Look for fill mark on PS edge of rad, aprox 3" below neck)

* Locate #1 and make sure you are at TDC. Placing a Kleenex in the plug
hole and rotating until it pops out is one method. (They also sell a
TDC whistle but I've never used one) Remember your calendar cycles
twice. Once is exhaust and the other is intake. You want to be on the
intake cycle hence the Kleenex trick.
* Set the distributor in place so the rotor points at the #1 location on
the cap, snug but leave screw loose enough so slight adjustments can be
made once the car is running. Check that rotor is installed and
correctly seated.
* Route your wires so they are located in the correct firing order and
direction of rotation for your car.(See link above)
* I back off the distributor slightly so the plug is firing a little
BTDC (Retard)
* Crank for a few seconds and then wait between cranking. Be careful
not to overheat your starter.
* If it doesn't fire at all check for spark. Make sure if you are
running HEI you have a direct switched power lead to the cap and do not
run through the firewall resistor. Also check for fuel in the carb.
Priming an once or two will help but be careful not to overdo it and do
not add if you smell fuel or carb is hot.
* If it fires but won't run try adjusting the distributor a little in
each direction.

Once she is running constantly check for leaks, temperature and any
signs of rubbing or unusual noises. Check exhaust for liquid running
out. A few small burps from the rad are normal and until this stops and
all air is out don't install the cap. A catch pan is a good idea under
this area. Look for excessive air bubbling in the rad. You should see
good flow once the engine is at temp and you rev the engine up. Don't
shut of the car without installing cap though once warm...been there,
cleaned up the mess...lol

I'm going by memory here guys so please correct me if I've made any
errors.

Good luck & enjoy

I've double checked my wiring & check a couple of books. But I could
try rotating the wires 180 and see what happens

Start by pulling the #1 plug and checking for the compression stroke.
Then
it's 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, counterclockwise on the distrib, #1 towards the
firewall/driver side.
