I have sometimes used a wire wheel on a drill to clean
some engine compartment bolt heads and then just
sprayed clear on the bolt heads by pushing the thread
portion into a cardboard box. This has lasted quite a
while on many of them. I have usually had most of the
plating left after the clean up.
