So what does everyone think about the situation where my original engine has
lost its numbers when it was decked. It still is the original numbers matching
engine! Should I have the numbers restamped?

Garth,

The best way to answer you is this...

The numbers are not "fake"... They are factory gang stamped. The same exact
type used by the casting plant ( once in a while a set will appear at a swap
meet). The best example is corvettes.

A lot of corvettes have what are called "restoration engines". They have the
correct part number block and are dated right for the car but are restamped
for restoration purposes. Some guys even go through the trouble of having a
block resurfaced the correct way ( very few shops have the macnine that cuts
the broack marks the right way) then are re-stamped.

30+ year old blocks need to be re-surfaced. When that happens, the numbers
get shaved off. So, they re-stamped back on.

It's a fact that many corvettes have been top flight judged ( perfect or
darn close to it restorations). there is no way all those cars have the
factory original engines. A lot have restoration engines.

See this link.. http://www.cranescorvette.com/toppage1.htm sorry, there are
some naked chicks on his page too....

There are a lot of ways to approach this. Maybe it's right maybe it's wrong
but it is more common than you think.

If numbers are no big deal, why try to find that YT block for your auto car
when a 77 400 will work ?
