John,

I should have said my car is a Sprint 6 cyl and the engine serial number is on the deck. Actually, I think enough of the number is left that a little acid will bring it back enough to read. But the question, in the case of a 6 cyl, is valid for Pontiacs, too.

Numbers Matching value vs non

Chevy's aren't like Pontiacs.
The chevy is on the deck of the block.

The Pontiac VIN,codes are on the front face.
It would never need 'machined'.
Therefore wouldn't need 'restamped'.

So what does everyone think about the situation where my original engine has
lost its numbers when it was decked. It still is the original numbers
matching engine! Should I have the numbers restamped?
