Just remember that the engine will torque in one direction whether you are going forward or reverse since the transmission is what switches direction (and the engine always spins in one direction).

Probably not with good motor mounts. Under hard acceleration the drivers side of the engine will tend to lift slightly and have more clearance from the steering gearbox. If you can reverse hard enough to torque the engine on its mounts it could hit, but you would really be backing up fast!

My headers were probably that close and I had them for several years with no sign of rubbing, but I do think that the heat might have been a factor in the power steering gearbox seal failure.
