I agree that the engine only produces torque in one direction, however both the engine and trans are subject to the reaction forces that result from being hooked to the driveshaft, axles, tires and pavement.

The engine and transmission will always try to twist in the direction opposite of driveshaft rotation (assuming that there is some resistance or load on the driveshaft). If you loosened the engine mounts, when you applied power in a forward gear the drivers side of the engine would rise, but as you applied power in reverse the passenger side of the engine would rise.

The same forces occur in normal driving, but are hopefully constrained by the engine mounts.
