First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List
.........................................................................
We were in an impromptu race in a semi-rural area and, as a teen, I hadn't given much thought to intersections until it was too late to stop for one. I had recently bought the car and hadn't yet gone through the brakes, or any of the other systems for that matter. The brakes ended up serving only to eventually bring us down to expressway speed. When it became obvious that we were going to blow the light, I leaned on the horn which, I was pleased to learn, was functional. Good thing most people were at work at the time. And that there were no deaf drivers in the way. And... I decided that once was enough.

I hadn't realized that there are disk brake kits that mount onto drum spindles. Too bad I have several years' worth left on my tires. Maybe I should do more racing...

My 68-350 with 3 speed topped out at 106 MPH.  It would do that at 1/2 throttle and more pedal didn't make any difference.  All I can say is God protects fools and drunks, cause if it could go faster, I probably would have, at 16YO.  And the car was floating like on a cloud.  I shudder to think of bias ply wide ovals I was driving on at that speed....
At 140 you must have been out of brake pedal by the time you were down to 90.
Those drums would heat up fast.  It was better to let off the brake pedal a
moment and try again.

I bought the Baer brake kit.  It bolted up okay on the drum spindles and 15" Ralley II
fit over with margin.  I don't see folks kicked out of the classic into the modified class
at shows for 15 inch rims.  I think they look correct enough when safety is in the
balance.
