Actually, Pontiac built GTOs on the post platform for nearly every year of the
production run from 1964 thru 72.

Two primary reasons. The post cars were less expensive, and thus buyers could still get a GTO for less money. Secondly, the post cars were a more rigid platform and thus were desirable to the racers (mostly drag) who were looking for a less
flexy body than the hardtop coupes.

Even today, one is hard pressed to find a true coupe without a B pillar as the
demand for more rigid chassis have mandated the post. Some car makers do
a pretty effective job of hiding the post, as in the new Camaro and Challenger.

Does anyone know the story behind the "post" in the the 66 GTO post cars? My
buddy and I were discussing this today, and I have scoured the web and can't
find a reason why Pontiac built over 7,000 cars with the post.
