First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... When I get back to working on my car, I have a door skin to install. I was lucky to find a GM skin two years ago..... $400. I worked on the old door for quite a while when I found the NOS part. A previous body shop drilled a row of 3/8" pull holes along the style line and paved it over with mud. I figured I would get nicer results with a fresh panel. I tried to correct the door with hammer and dolly methods. My arms were black and blue from trying to reach through the few tiny cut outs in the door shell to hold the dolly. I was just not able to get any energy into the dent with that confined space and limited access. It is just not easy to metal finish one of these doors because access is so bad.
Folks who have done this before told me to trial fit and align the new skin in the door opening before folding the hem over. If the original door was correctly adjusted before, you'll hit all the gaps and style lines that way without tweaking on the hinge settings..
