I've asked myself the same question many times. I see the guys on TV  
(Overhaulin', Musclecar, HorsePower) installing complete engines, with the  
tranny 
attached, and I just hold my breath until they get the thing on the  mounts. 
Personally, I'm just not comfortable with it, but I tend to be a bit  
overcautious anyway. 
 
Anyone going to be at the Food Lion Auto Fair this weekend @ Lowes Motor  
Speedway in Charlotte/Concord? I'm taking the day off work on Friday so I can  
spend the day. My car isn't anywhere near ready for the road but maybe I'll run 
 
across a deal or two on parts or accessories.

Can  I interrupt this thread with a stupid question?

How is it that those  four tiny little bolts threaded into an aluminum intake 
can support the entire  weight of an engine?  Can you use one with the 
transmission  attached?
