I did it on my engine without much of a problem. I borrowed a spring
compressor from my engine builder (I think it was a Moroso unit) that
screws onto the rocker stud. The other thing you need is an air
fitting (you can get from most any auto parts store) that screws into
the spark plug hole and you hook it to your air compressor. The air
pressure will keep the valves closed while you change the springs.

The instructions that came with my XE274 say to take the inner
springs out during break in. The 995-16 springs that go with this
cam are very stiff, 409 lb/in. I understand how this will put less
force on the valve train and cam but what a pain in the arse. I
already have the heads on. Is it really practical to get the inner
springs off and back on with the heads on the engine? I can just
imagine trying to keep the valves fully seated while compressing the
spring to get the locks on would be next to impossible.
