There have been some real problems in the last few years with camshaft break-ins due to the changing of motor oil formulas. Some of the better lubricating metals such as zinc and magnesium have been removed from modern oils because they tend to clog the pores of oxygen sensors. Using a diesel oil such as Rotella T that still has these lubricating metals in them is recommended for the first few thousand miles with a new flat tappet camshaft. If you ever wondered why today's engines use roller tappets, now you know why. Most cam manufacturers sell a break-in additive that serve the same purpose. If you Google "camshaft break-in" you'll find numerous articles on the subject.

Subject: [FGF] Comp Cam Break-in

The instructions that came with my XE274 say to take the inner springs out during break in. The 995-16 springs that go with this cam are very stiff, 409 lb/in. I understand how this will put less force on the valve train and cam but what a pain in the arse. I already have the heads on. Is it really practical to get the inner springs off and back on with the heads on the engine? I can just imagine trying to keep the valves fully seated while compressing the spring to get the locks on would be next to impossible.

Thanks,
Sheen
