I always glue the gaskets to the valve covers and let the glue cure
before I install them on the engine. It gets so much easier to keep the
gaskets in the correct position. Has worked fine for me. Haven't tried
aftermarket valve covers though.

I used a set of aftermarket chrome covers and they were a PITA to keep
from leaking.  The metal was thin and the chrome did not want to seal
using normal gaskets.  I tried cork, rubber and finally just used
silicone to seal them to the heads.
