Well, last summer I had this problem too, tried the cables, external solenoid etc. no real luck... eventually I took the starter off, took it apart and found out the thick copper wire inside the starter (which connects to the terminals) was all worn out because the starter axle was rubbing it.

After I restored that: no problems ever since

Jim, the exsisting battery cable was not long enough for me. I mounted mine
on the inner fender in the large cavity behind the wheel and inside of the
fender. Never had problems. Also you may want to upgrade the battery cable
to a larger gauge cable.
Another thing is that you can usually use the same stock solenoid wires.
